The lens pen is a great tool that every photographer should have in their bag. Fast and painless way to get smudges and dust off of the lens. The bundled cleaning kit is actually pretty decent. The microfiber cloth is actually a microfiber cloth and doesn’t leave behind lint like some other cheap ones. The blower is compact and fits well in my camera bag. Haven’t used the lens cleaning fluid, tissues or swabs yet, but they appear to be of decent quality. Totally worth it for the price even if you never use the cleaning fluid

First SLR owned since my old film Canon TLb about 30 years ago. This camera, together with books by Scott Kelby, Videos by Lynda.com and the Strobist website have reignited my passion for photography. The best thing about a Digital camera is the instant feedback loop. Now I can experiment with various apertures, shutter speed settings, compositions and flash settings and get back instantaneous feedback. And you can take as many shots as you want and then just delete then if you don’t have any winners. Digital SLRs really speed up the learning process.

The XSi is a great camera, and Canon produces a great variety of lenses. The only area that I am less than impressed is with off-camera flash where Nikon MAY have a slight edge. If nothing else - it is easier to get info on the net for Nikon flash configurations.

Regardless, I love my XSi, and look forward to many months of learning about light, composition and expression.

  3. Belnap says:

Not much I can say here that others haven’t already said, I’m just adding my vote to a well thought-out and functioning camera. Canon has been taking accolades for their digital camera line for years, and this model continues to be a joy to use and own. I’m super critical of tech stuff as I’m a 27 year tech-head veteran.

Battery life is very good and memory is cheap compared to what it was. I would stick with a Class 4 or Class 6 SDHC memory card.

While not a professional photographer, from the technical aspect of combining this unit with a PC and their software, they’ve provided a nice solution. The software is fairly decent, not the best, but does the job. Bundle it with Adobe Lightroom or just a simple Google Picasa and you are good to go with managing your photos.

Both Lightroom and Picasa can view the RAW images and touch-up with this file format is exceptional. The CameraWindow software and bundled utilities allows you to use a laptop to control the camera and settings, preview images on a larger screen, and instantly store into RAW/JPG file formats to disk. This is a big bonus when in a studio environment.

Their Zoombrowser image viewer is very functional and usable. While I’m now using Picasa and Lightroom to manage the images, Zoombrowser is certainly capable for any novice to intermediate user.

I use a 50mm lens, 18-200mm IS lens, and 580II flash as my primary equipment. The only thing I could imagine getting next is a L series lens.

    Nice job Canon!

  4. Laurell says:

Canon continues it’s great line of EOS Rebel cameras with the XSi. Outstanding features, great quality and very user friendly. Both lenses included in the kit are high quality. I bought this as a graduation gift after having bought one just like it for myself. My only complaint is despite choosing 5 day shipping, Amazon delivered this item after 7 days not only missing their commit date but also ruining when I needed this as a gift.

  5. Hamilton says:

Just purchased the camera and found it to be everything I wanted, and more. Have been using 35 mm cameras for years, as well as the digital cameras. This is a great step above the standard point and shoot cameras, and is very easy to operate and to take advantage of the upgrades. Very easy to use, fantastic photos, especially when using some of the software options out there like PhotoShop. Took over 600 photos while down in Savannah this past month and love the idea of framing the photos while shooting. Highly recommend the camera and can’t wait to get a telephoto lense. Wish I would have purchased this as well, but hindsight is a wonderful thing. Looking to upgrade with the 55-200mm lense next. The battery lasts forever!

  6. Uccello says:

I am beyond happy with my new D5000. I am what you’d call a “pre-professional” and this camera has produced amazing shots for me. Also, the functionality and ease of settings is great. I love the option of having live-view on the display, and the swivel-out feature is also very helpful. I can’t recommend this camera highly enough!!

  7. Lieberman says:

I decided to upgrade to a DSLR a few months ago because I wanted to learn to take the fabulous pictures that I had come to associate with DSLRs. After I made the decision, the next choice was Cannon or Nikon. My current point and shoot camera was a Cannon PowerShot, so I thought I would stick with Cannon until I saw the specs on the D5000. It had everything that I liked about my Cannon and was worried about giving up–video, a rotating screen with Live View–all in an affordable DSLR package, so I decided to take the plunge and go Nikon.

After a month of using the camera in different situations–a trip to New York, a wedding, a bridal shower, a kid’s birthday party–I couldn’t be happier. I’m very much a beginner when it comes to operating a DSLR, but all of the pictures I’ve taken with the D5000 have been excellent. The camera was easy to pick up and start using, but it is also easy enough to learn to start customizing your shots for different situations. I’m impressed by the camera’s ability to help a beginner by auto-selecting some settings while allowing the photographer to manually select other things. The kit lens is a good starter lens, and works for most of the situations I’ve shot in so far. I’m still learning what this camera can do, and I’m excited to know that the D5000, with its advanced features, can grow along with me as I develop as a photographer.

In terms of size, I have small hands and I feel like I can comfortably carry around the D5000. Yes it is bigger and heavier than a point and shoot, but it’s not so big that its cumbersome for me to carry. Which is a good thing, because I’ve started carrying this camera everywhere because I always want to be able to capture that perfect shot!

If you’re transitioning from a point and shoot to a DSLR and you want something with great features that still is easy to use, this is the camera for you. I couldn’t be happier with my D5000–when you get that crisp shot of a kid opening presents or a beautiful bride coming down the aisle, it’s so worth it to have made this investment!

  8. Ogletree says:

Overall, this is a great camera. The gentleman writing the 1 star review apparently bought this camera with incompatible expectations. This will not replace your digital or HD camcorder (and was not designed to; read reviews on other dslr’s that do HD video([...], etc.)) The shutter response is very quick. Pros over the D60: bracketing, 11-point AF, higher resolution, faster reponse time, swivel LCD; over D90: $450 cheaper…. Will write more after I get to use it on vacation next week.

  9. Ice says:

The ineffective “LiveView” mode on the D5000 may prompt Nikon to recall this model, trust me, it is that bad.
I tested “LiveView” myself because I was expecting it to work acceptably since it is really the only feature that makes this camera different than a less expensive model like the Nikon D60. I spent one hour playing with the D5000 in LiveView and not once the camera managed to find the correct focus, it never ever focused on the subject inside the AF area. And it gets worse, the camera would tell you that it has achieved focus (showing a green rectangle instead of red) even if the image is completely and utterly blurred from corner to corner. I have heard “rumors” about the LiveView failure online but I never in my wildest dreams imagined it would be such a complete failure, it is absolutely useless.
The Canon Digital Rebel also offers LiveView but it also does a neat trick allowing you to lower the mirror for a fraction of a second to focus properly, this is still a “workaround” but at least it works.
Nikon made a unforgivable mistake by not adding such an important feature and they open themselves up for a recall for false advertising a feature that it does not have.
The only reason I did not give this Nikon D5000 one star is because it is supposed to perform better than others under low-light conditions but if LiveView is important to you, I strongly suggest you avoid this. I love my Nikons, but you may want to skip this model.
If Nikon ever fixes the LiveView AF issue I will delete this review or updated it accordingly.

  10. Melendez says:

I bought a D5000 locally ten days ago and exchanged it for another one three days ago.

The first thing I did was get out in the early morning light and take some landscape photos with the D5000 and my D40. Over the next few days I continued taking dozens of photos testing various settins on the D5000. I used my old 18-55mm non-VR zoom lens and the new 35mm f/1.8 lens.

Right away, it was obvious that the D5000’s image quality greatly exceeds the D40’s. First, megapixels DO matter if you want to look at your photos on a big monitor, and they add texture to the details of landscapes. Second, I don’t know what processing magic Nikon has rolled into the D5000, but it handles low light with more subtlety and predictability. Caveat: While Active D-Lighting is generally desirable, it may sacrifice contrast that you want to keep in strong lighting situations.

The one problem I have experienced is that many of the photos came with a strong yellow-ochre cast suggesting that the camera was pushing too much amber into the white balance. Green grass would turn chartreuse and blue skies would become pale. This occurred unpredictably, perhaps 75% of the time. The rest of the images would have what look to me like perfect colors–much better and more subtle than the D40, which is pretty good. (I am evaluating these photos on a calibrated color-accurate monitor.)

After fiddling with white balance settings, hue, WB bracketing, turning ADL on and off, etc., etc., I returned the first camera, only to find that the second one does the same thing. Yesterday, however, I stumbled across the fact that if you select “Direct Sunlight” WB instead of “Auto White Balance” (and you actually have sunlight) the problem goes away and the colors are perfect.

A little more research on the internet indicates that the unpredictable behavior of Auto White Balance is a well known problem on many digital cameras. Essentially the camera is trying to guess what lighting conditions apply, but most of the experts who came up in my search strongly recommended manually selecting and/or adjusting white balance. Now, I didn’t think that my D40 or the other cameras I owned had this problem, but maybe the other issues they did have were related. For instance, the D40 often put a faint blue cast into shadow areas that wasn’t there. A D60 that I briefly owned was worse in this regard.

Like the D40 before it, the D5000’s manual recommends Auto White Balance for most situations, but you may want to question that. This is a bit a disappointment, because the way Nikon has intelligently automated so many menu choices is part of the D5000’s excitement, but it seems that the Auto White Balance problem is common among DSLRs.

  11. Ibarra says:

I love the camera….fun to use and learn….takes great pictures!
Thankfully you don’t need the software that comes with it because it crashed my computer. I had to restore…but it let me restore it to a point before I installed the Sony Software so I didn’t lose anything… anyone else have problems with the software? Is there a fix?

  12. Patito says:

I recieved the camera this week. First of all. You can’t use it till you buy a memory card. The manual is ok at best. However if you have a little experience with cameras. You will be happy with the A200 (alpha)..

DO NOT LOAD THE SOFTWARE UNTIL YOU BACK EVERYTHING UP!!!..The first time I tried to load it? My computer would not restart until it went thru troubleshoot mode. So I tried it again..Like the idiot I am…

Then it locked my computer up for good. The only way I could save my computer was with SYSTEM RECOVERY… I lost all my files and started from scratch…Then tried it again..After loading new software for a printer and a Canon camera…With the same result… Locked up on SONY..

The camera is OK…Beware of the software!…
