i received the remote in a small little envelope. I was surprised… i thought there was something to download. There was a plastic tab to pull that separated the battery from the remote. Don’t know the strength of the battery, but it works when you hold it towards the sensor of your camera. Now to hold your hand so it doesn’t look like you are pressing a remote. Yeah… that was the first shot, lol

My refurbished D40 has a tiny smudge on all photos which may be a defective ccd. Nikon tech support has to date been very helpful and I have sent the camera to a service center for repair. Hopefully I end up w/ a like-new camera.
nickww
This is my first (and probably last) DSLR camera. I am very pleased with it. I purchased it after a lot of research because I wanted the most camera I could get without a large investment. I also wanted a camera that wouldn’t require the next year or so to learn how to use it. This camera really fills the bill. Recently took it to Rocky Mtn. Nation Park and produced excellent photos. I have several Nikon digital point and shoot camera’s but the photo results and quick shutter of the D40 can’t be compared to the point and shoot camera’s. The Ken Rockwell http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d40.htm review settled the decision to but this camera. I’m glad I did. Now for a good flash; the remote and a telephoto.
Nikon D40 was our first DSLR purchase. Before this we have owned only point and shoot cameras. My colleague and friends convinced me to go for a DSLR. After a lot of reaseach and much debate, we went for the Nikon D40 instead of D60 or D90. I am glad that I went for the Nikon D40 because it is a great entry level camera. I am an amateur and the feature set is just right. It took me about 30 minutes of reading and playing with the camera to figure out the basic modes and start shooting. Took it to Europe and it did a great job in taking the pictures. My wife took a lot of pictures from a moving car and they came out great. The pictures of the Swiss Alps were just amazing along with Lake Luzerne and other pictures
The only drawback is the basic lens. It works fine on landscape. However, the zoom is not enough if you want to take the picture of an individual who is more than 10-12 feet away. If you want to do that, you would have to get an additional lens. Overall, I love the camera. It is light, easy to carry and works very well for an amateur like myself
I am a Canon fan when it comes to point-and-shoot pocket size cameras. For me, money can’t buy a point-and-shoot camera better than an Elph. When it came time to upgrade to a DSLR, I chose Nikon. I have friends in the photography business (Weddings) and they always choose Nikon over Canon. That said, both brands are great.
I do not consider myself a profession, but more of an prosumer. I chose the D40 because I wanted a lightweight DSLR for vacations and college football games. Yes, this camera is great for college football. While it only does 2.5 frames/sec, I find that it is more than enough for my needs.
You can get more megapixels now, but it is not necessary. Most will probably choose the D60 or the new D5000 over the D40. When I chose the D40, I was choosing based on several factors, including price. The D40 was the least expensive at the time. Plus, I put the money I saved into extra betteries and memory cards. 6.1 megapixels is enough for me and I feel that it is a good balance between photo size and defintion. You can crop nicely, even at 6.1 megapixels. This camera is smaller is size and is lighter in weight than mosr DSLRs.
I have found the menu settings to be easy to understand and can recall the locations of settings with ease. You can also create a customized menu for your favorite options.
I recently shot vow renewal ceremony with this camera and the additional Sb-400 speedlight flash, bouncing the light off of the ceiling. The camera was more than adequate and took some great photos.
When you read this review, do a price/features comparison for the camera that suits your needs.
This camera practically doesn’t need reviews. It’s a Nikon. And I’m sure it’s the best cost x benefit available for a Nikon digital SLR camera. Specially if your are no professional photographer like me.
My advise: buy the basic camera and than choose a camera-less kit that better suites your needs.
And don’t forget that the camera doesn’t have any internal memory and doesn’t come with any memory card either.
Amazing in low light(very low noise at high ISO), fast, customizable, controls Speedlight Flashes wirelessly.
If I would have to buy but one camera it would be this one.
The video capability is very nice, but tricky.
Coming from Canon point and shoot and seeing it’s limitations, i finally decided to upgrade to dSLRs. I wanted an entry level camera at the same time will give me that room for me improve as i grow my photography skills. I narrowed my choice between Canon 50D and Nikon D90. Knowing that both are almost match with the 50D better on the spec sheet i went to a local camera shop and decide which one feels better in my hands. Being a Canon shooter it was hard for me to even look and try the Nikon but when i got my hands on the D90 everything changed. It felt better, not too big nor small, not too heavy or light and plasticy feel and it just feels better in my hands than the bulkier 50D. I really liked the control layout better, and the quick info button that i eventually remapped to my quick menu which enables me to change AF modes quickly and easily. The pictures are just amazing and i could switch between different picture controls i’ve set for people (nice skin tones) and to things (saturated, popping colors). The 4.3 fps or so speed is just perfect to capture my 1year old son and the 18-105 kit lens was just perfect zoom range for my needs. Again not too heavy. I also have 70-300VR lens for some telephoto shots. I’ve had my D90 now for almost 3 months and the new D5000 and Canon T1i that have come out and if i would have to redo it again i’d still go with the D90. The HD 720p video is ok and a nice to have feature for some quick video clips of my kids. Overall, this is a very nice and more than capable dSLR and is right in the sweet spot of beginner (D40, D5000) to pro cameras (D700 and even D3).
I did alot of reaserch before i chose this camera. And i am so glad i did. It is everything the articals and amazon told me it would be.
I am a amiture photographer and love shooting outside. I could not have chosen a better camera. I love that with the lens you can be in Auto mode (for regular family photos) and then change to manual (for the great art shots) I am very happy with this camera.
Just remember it is like a set of lego’s. you always want more! Another lens or another filter or a different strap. Try and pace yourself and see what other people have before you get sucked into the Photographers black hole of buying equipment.
..because I’ve wasted them on point-and-shoot cameras. So many missed opportunities and grainy low light shots. No more with this camera, especially when coupled with the inexpensive 50mm/f1.8 lens. Although I am attempting to learn to fully utilize the camera, I was very concerned that just using auto mode would not work any better than a point-and-shoot. To put it mildly, I was wrong. If you are considering leaping into the DSLR world, it’s worth it.
I was in the market for a “mid-level” DSLR as my second slr, and I have to say that I’m absolutely thrilled with this camera. For me, it was either Canon or Nikon, and I just decided to go with the Nikon after testing several and reading reviews. After reading the reviews, I was a little concerned about some of the reviews with malfunctions, but, after two months, I haven’t had the slightest problem, and the picture quality is fantastic. I chose the D90 over the D5000 because I didn’t like the flip screen (something to break off or go wrong, and I’d read reviews about the D5000’s difficult readability in bright light with the LCD. I love the balanced weight of this camera with the lens, I bought a Hoya multicoated UV filter for scratches and have loved the pictures it’s produced thus far. I can’t tell you the costs and benefits as much as the others, but this camera has been quiet, quick, and efficient, and produced brilliant photos for my money. For me, there are a ton of features, some of which I may never use, but the bottom line is for me, looking through the viewfinder and getting a crisp, clean shot is what it comes to, and I’m so pleased I got this combo.
Had mine get used up after a couple hrs of continuous turned on and shooting, but throw in the spare and you’re good to go!
Is money that you tink are wasted. But take picture at the right time without battery. I relly enjoy have a back up.
You gotta get one.
Because the Canon digital SLR cameras use proprietary battery packs (as does pretty much EVERY digital SLR) you really don’t want to get caught out on a trip with a dead battery - can’t just run to the store and grab more AA’s.
Luckily, you CAN prepare yourself by grabbing a spare Canon battery from amazon.com. The good news is that these batteries last a really long time (at least on my XT) and there’s no way I’ve ever come CLOSE to going through two in one day. So while they’re pricey, I only felt the need to buy one spare, and that has held me find.
I know there are cheaper aftermarket brands out there, and I know that there *may* be no difference - but for me, I’d prefer to put a canon branded battery in my camera, as any kind of leakage will destroy the entire thing, and at least this way the warranty will cover it. Or so I assume: I thankfully have never had that happen (nor have I heard of it in third party batteries).
Still though, even if it’s all in my mind, I prefer the Canon piece, and as I said, just one will do ya!
I was going to purchase a cheaper battery for my Canon XT, but after reading stories on how the generic batteries died after a few shots, I decided to purchase a Canon made battery. I am very pleased and after shooting a few hundred photos the battery is still going strong. I think it is worth the extra dollars to make sure the battery is there for you when you need it.
This battery is a good value for the money. Don’t waste your money on the cheaper knock offs.
This is a great camera, I spent a long time reading reviews about it online before purchasing. After my purchase I started to research more about photography and Nikon, and I ran in to Ken Rockwell’s (aka the Nikon Man) page. Here is his conclusion on the D60:
“The Nikon D60 is a ’sucker’ camera sold mostly to people who are not professional photographers, but who are impressed by meaningless megapixels. Megapixels have nothing to do with picture quality. The less expensive D40 is the same thing as the D60, but better. The D40 is the professional’s vacation camera. It’s what I take when I’m on vacation or with family, too.”"
You can google “Ken Rockwell” for more info. Imagine how I felt after reading this. Nevertheless I enjoy my D60, and think its a very good camera for introduction to DSLR.
the D60 is a lot of fun to use, especially for a relative photograghy amateur
I purchase the Camera from Cameta Camera, here on Amazon. The Camera is great. It’s very easy to use and takes excellent pictures. I only have one complaint about the camera. The sensor that turns off the LCD screen when you put your face up to the viewfinder is WAY to sensitive. If you happen to be in a certain kind of light, for instance under a tree where the sun/shade is sporadic, the screen will get confused and blink on and off repeatedly. Check the forums and you’ll see it’s a common problem with the D60. When it starts to do this, it’s best to just turn the Auto off function off until you are in better light. I think it’s just a shoddy design flaw. It’s not a huge deal, it’s just when you dump a few hundred dollars on something, you expect it to work flawlessly. No such luck. Other than that, it’s a great camera.
Now a word about the seller. Take from this what you will. I bought my D60 here on Amazon from Cameta Camera. They supposedly sell a Nikon Factory Refurbished D60. That is NOT true. I don’t know hoe they get away with such false advertising. When I purchased the product, I was sent an invoice that said “Nikon D60 Factory Demo”. These are cameras that have been used for advertising purposes in stores, trade shows, etc. That is not what I ordered or wanted. I immediately called Cameta and spoke to a very friendly customer service representative who assured me that the camera I ordered was indeed a Factory Refurbished product and that the invoice was simply wrong. She even said that the invoice said Factory Demo because they were having a problem with their software. That was a lie. Later, when I was having problems with the LCD screen, I spoke to their technical support representative, who shed light on their products. He said that when they are listing an item, Amazon does not have an option for “Factory Demo” and so they have to select “Refurbished”. When I expressed my disappointment, the Representative actually said, “If it will make you feel better if I tell you it’s refurbished, I’ll tell you it’s refurbished.” Pretty shocking. So, a word to the wise. If you want a Factory Refurbished D60, do not order it from Cameta.
There is really nothing to say about Nikon. Nikon is Nikon. The camera is great and makes incredible pictures. There is a lot to be learned about the camera and how to use it.
Almost 30 years ago all I had was an SLR and loved it. My Minolta XG cameras were wonderful and took better pictures than almost anything I have ever had. Eventually they started having issues and film became almost obsolete. I used Canon P and S digital cameras for many years and recently bought a Panasonic Lumix TZ5 which is fabulous. I wanted to get back in to SLR and did much research and tried many hands on displays in local stores. I also spoke to many people in local camera shops and they all suggested getting the D60 over the D40 as well as the Rebel XSi assuming I could afford the D60. The Rebel XSi is much bigger than the D60, and for the money the D60 was saving me, virtually all stated the D60 was a much better value then the Rebel, and that picture quality between the two was virtually identical. Costco had a package for $699.00 which included D60, 1GB card (almost worthless now), two VR lenses (18-55 and 55-200 Nikon) and case. The case was worthless as it was way to small for everything. After a few days, I decided I did not want to mess with changing out lenses, and since the “free” Nikon bag was too small, plus the tax was high where I bought, brought back to Costco. There was nothing special about the two Nikon Lenses either and I found that when using the 18-55mm lens with a skylight and polarizing filter, when at the widest angle setting, 18mm, the two filters together were too thick and caused distortion in the view. The D60 itself was just “OK”, not great but then again I did not have much use. I did like the many optional features and options the camera offered. I then saw on Amazon a special version, “black gold” (body only) and I decided to order from Amazon with the Tamron 18-200mm single lens and although the Tamron lacks “VR” I still paid MUCH less than the Costco package and also ordered the remote and an extra battery and a couple of filters to boot.
It was a great deal with $50.00 off and I trust Amazon anyway.
As far as the actual pictures the initial camera took, I did not have much experience, but based on what I saw so far seemed ok. There was a difference I saw when using “P” setting versus “AUTO” and did not exactly understand all the menu options, but the Nikon D60 fit really well in my hands, was easy to use, felt sturdy and I will give another chance. Also the “black gold” special version sure looks nice.
On a final note, I did not buy an SLR for the “live View” and that sort of defeats the purpose for me of an SLR. I also could care less about what, if any, software comes with the camera. All I want is a decent SLR and lens for around what I paid. Even if the software was real bad, and as the D60 comes, with no “live view”, I would not let it affect my rating. After I get the D60 I ordered from Amazon, I will update the review.
